Kate Ford (AKA Tracy Barlow) attended our celebration event in March to present LACES young people with their hard earned AQA awards.
All young people had been working hard over the last year to make sure they could get their Assessment and Qualification Unit Awards, or as we like to call them AQA’s, at the event.
Outstanding achievement awards were also given to Kirsty Smith, Becky Goring and Andrew Williams.
The event was at County Hall and with over 80 people there, it was quite a scary time but LACES young people, such as Kirsty and Becky got up and showed what LACES is all about.
Kirsty, who was referred to LACES in November 2005, says;
‘I’ve learnt a lot of life skills which is why I think this is a really good idea. I didn’t do any exams at school, but have got 3 AQA awards from LACES. I went to college for a while but I’m not good with big places and lots of people. When I first started LACES I was a bit scared but now I’ve got some office skills and I’m more confident. If I hadn’t started LACES I’d be sat at home doing nothing, I’m really glad I did it!’
LACES stands for the Looked After Children Employability Skills scheme. It helps young people find part time work experience placements. The aim is to help young people build their self-esteem and improve their personal skills, whilst working at their own individual speed. Young people are provided with intense support both from the placements and the LACES worker so that when times are difficult outside work, they can lean on these people to help them get through their day. It is hoped that the extra support they receive will help young people get full time work or go to college.
